Springfield Echelon Pro Comp: CADRE NEWS

— Cory Ross

Springfield Armory just launched the Echelon Pro Comp, a performance-focused version of its striker-fired Echelon 9mm pistol. It comes in three sizes, and all three carry an MSRP of $899.

I fell for the Springfield Echelon when it was released. It checked nearly every box on my wish list—a contoured grip with swappable backstraps, an updated optic system that doesn’t use plates, aggressive slide serrations, and more.

To me, it’s almost the perfect duty or defensive pistol—almost. Personally, I have two: a full-size decked out with a factory-threaded barrel and a Herrington Arms Comp, and a compact-size model I keep locked in my vehicle. My only real complaint about either has been the grip texture; I wish it were more aggressive.

The Echelon Pro Comp is Springfield’s answer to that complaint, and I think it might be perfect.

SPECS

Springfield built the Pro Comp on the fully ambidextrous Echelon platform and tuned it for performance. The specs for all three sizes are below.

FEATURES

The Pro Comp comes in three sizes: the 4.0C compact, the 4.0FC hybrid, and 4.5F full-size. Like every Echelon, it uses a serialized Central Operating Group, so you can swap grip modules in different sizes and colors, and the Variable Interface System mounts popular optics directly to the slide.

Grip Texture

The LightForged Grip Texture uses precision lasers to create a consistent pattern for traction and control. Springfield compares the result to custom stippling, and the “cracked-earth” look is hard to miss.

Magwell and Magazines

A machined-steel flared magwell sits at the base of the grip, and it is removable if you prefer flush-fit magazines.

Every Pro Comp ships with three extended magazines: 18 rounds for the 4.0C and 20 rounds for the 4.0FC and 4.5F

Slide, Sights, and Guide Rod

The slide is integrally compensated and finished in Gray Cerakote, which sets it apart from the black frame. The tritium front sight wears an orange luminescent ring and pairs with a serrated black rear sight, and a stainless steel guide rounds out the changes.

ZOOMING OUT

The new Echelon Pro Comp takes the base Echelon and does everything I’d want to make it perfect. That includes upgrading the grip texture, adding a magwell, swapping to a stainless-steel guide rod, and moving to a tritium front sight.

And I think the MSRP of $899 is fair. You’d pay more than that to do all these updates yourself on a stock Echelon. I think this is a winner.

Springfield lists all three models on its Echelon Pro page. For a hands-on look at the 4.5F, read Shane Jahn’s Echelon Pro Comp review.

Shane Jahn says the Echelon Pro is a worthy fighting pistol.
