If you haven’t heard, CZ has discontinued its famed CZ 75 handgun line.
When I first learned of the decision, a scene from the hit series Yellowstone immediately came to mind. In the scene, Rip and several other wranglers are in Texas with the herd when Rip visits legendary spur maker Billy Klapper to pick up a set of spurs for Lloyd. Before Rip leaves, Klapper gives him a second set for himself.
Later, back at the 6666 Ranch, Rip shows the “Klappers” to Dusty, another wrangler. Dusty looks at the spurs and delivers a line that feels especially fitting here: “When he’s gone, we’re all out of legends—with nobody trying to be the next one.”
NO MORE LEGENDS
This line resonated with me because it applies to the CZ 75 in its own way. For over five decades, the CZ 75 has served as more than just another handgun. Its distinctive design, steel construction, ergonomics, and influence on the modern pistol market have established it as a legend. Although the firearms industry will continue to produce excellent handguns, some designs become benchmarks rather than mere products.
This pistol is one of them. What the 1911 is to the United States, the CZ 75 is to Europe. With CZ closing the book on the original 75 line, it’s worth taking a moment to look back at how this iconic pistol earned its place in firearms history—and what we’re losing now that the next generation won’t be a CZ 75.
A MOSTLY TOTAL LINE END
The move will phase out several classic-era CZ 75 models, preserving only the new 75 Legend, introduced as a 50th-anniversary product for the series. The assorted SP/P-01 series 75s, the alloy-framed 75 D PCR, and the CZC A-01 line—a CZ Customs-tuned model—will remain in production. Only the classic 75 B, 75 BD, and 75 Compact will be discontinued.
CZ noted in a press release that “each played an important role in carrying the CZ 75 design forward,” and have been valued by shooters for their balance, craftsmanship, and proven design, becoming lasting parts of the CZ lineup and of the shooting experiences of generations of customers.
ZOOMING OUT
This is the second major product discontinuation in the past 12 months. At the end of 2025, Walther announced the discontinuation of the famous Walther PPK and PPK/S families—the famed sidearm of 007. Who knew the CZ 75 would be next?
My guess is that changing market demands, supply chain constraints, and new product introductions are the reason for CZ’s decision. I just hope someone else tries to become the next legend.
