Light and Laser? Nightstick's New Subcompact TCM-365-GL

— Jason MosherCADRE Dispatch

When it comes to self-defense handguns, people have some pretty strong opinions about accessories. There’s the purist who believes in keeping things simple—just the gun, no frills. Then there’s the light enthusiasts who argue, “If you can’t see it, you can’t shoot it!” Not to mention the laser lovers who swear by the power of the little red, or in this case, green dot.

But for those who can’t make up their minds between a light or a laser, why not both? Today we are looking at one of Nightstick’s new handgun accessories, the TCM-365-GL. This is a subcompact handgun-mounted light with a built-in laser.

Instead of endlessly debating between a light or laser, you can choose both — if you don’t need one or the other, don’t use it. But if you need it, it’s there are ready to go.

Nightstick TCM-365-GL Subcompact Weapon Light

The Nightstick TCM-365-GL is a powerhouse packed into a compact frame, making it an ideal accessory for those who carry subcompact handguns like the SIG Sauer P365, Hellcat, FN Reflex, and more.

As its name suggests, the TCM-365-GL is designed specifically for these smaller pistols, but don’t let its size fool you. This little guy is loaded with features that are perfect for maximizing your self-defense setup.

First off, let’s talk about the light. The TCM-365-GL features a 650-lumen LED light that delivers a bright, white beam — enough to light up a dark alley or disorient a potential threat. This may not sound like a lot of light compared to some of the larger, high-lumen lights. But for a compact light, it’s plenty bright enough to get the job done.

The light has an estimated run time of about 50 minutes, which is more than sufficient for most self-defense scenarios. It’s powered by a single CR123 battery, which is the type most commonly used in weapon-mounted lights these days. It’s easy to replace by unscrewing the end of the light, which only takes a few seconds.

What sets the TCM-365-GL apart from other weapon lights is the integrated green laser. The laser is visible in a wide range of lighting conditions, including bright daylight, and provides a clear aiming point. The combination of light and laser makes target acquisition faster and more intuitive, especially under stress. The laser is factory-aligned at 10 yards, however, you can also use the elevation and windage settings to adjust it to your preferences.

Programming the TCM-365-GL

Programming the Nightstick TCM-365-GL is straightforward, but getting familiar with the process can ensure you’re ready to go when it counts. Let’s break it down.

Battery Safe Mode

This mode is a lifesaver — literally. The TCM-365-GL features a “Battery Safe Mode” to prevent accidental activation during storage or transport, which is key to preserving battery life.

To engage this mode, press and hold both side buttons for five seconds until the light flashes twice. This disables the light and laser, ensuring the unit doesn’t accidentally drain its battery while bouncing around in your holster or bag. To exit Battery Safe Mode, simply repeat the process, holding both buttons until the light flashes twice again.

Light and Laser Mode

Switching between light-only, laser-only, and combined light/laser modes is a breeze. The TCM-365-GL is equipped with an intuitive interface so you can cycle through modes quickly. Here’s how to do it:

  • To activate the light only, press down on one side button.
  • Press and release the other side button until the light only is on.
  • Continue this process to cycle through each setting until it’s in the configuration you want.

Strobe Mode

The TCM-365-GL also features a Strobe Mode for those who wish to use it. To activate the strobe, press both side buttons five times simultaneously. The light will blink several times and turn off. Now, you can press either side button once for constant light, or twice for strobe. Repeat this process to turn Strobe Mode back off.

Why Add a Laser to the Mix?

So, why bother with a laser when you’ve already got a powerful light on your handgun? The answer lies in the added precision and confidence that a laser provides, especially in high-stress situations. When adrenaline is pumping, and your hands are shaking, aligning your traditional iron sights might not be as easy as it is on the range. That’s where the laser comes in.

The laser on the TCM-365-GL gives you a clear point of aim that’s easy to see, even when you’re on the move or when your focus is on the threat rather than your sights. This can be particularly beneficial in a defensive scenario where fractions of a second count. Instead of lining up the front and rear sights, you simply place the dot on your target and press the trigger. This simplicity can make a significant difference when your life is on the line.

You can program the TCM-365-GL to run with just a laser if you want.

A laser also helps with muzzle awareness, which is also important during stressful times. When you, and others, can see the green dot, it’s clear where your muzzle is facing.

Look at the target, not your sights

Lasers also offer an advantage in unconventional shooting positions. Let’s say you’re caught off guard and need to shoot from a less-than-ideal angle — perhaps from the hip or while lying on the ground. In these situations, using traditional sights is extremely difficult. A laser, however, allows you to maintain accuracy in awkward positions.

Lastly, a laser can be a fantastic training tool. By dry firing with the laser on, you can see how steady your aim is and work on minimizing any flinch or jerk during trigger pulls. This feedback is invaluable for improving your shooting skills and ensuring that when the time comes, you’re as accurate as possible.

Shooting with the green laser was fun and made target Acquisitions even easier.

Of course, you want to make sure your gun is safe, unloaded, and pointed in a safe direction when doing this. I like to dry fire almost as much as I fire live ammo. It’s a great conditioning and training exercise you can easily do at home. When you hear the “click” and your laser never moves, you’re doing good.

Wrapping It Up

The Nightstick TCM-365-GL is a great laser/light combo for those compact handguns. I’ve been using Nightstick products for some time, and they are extremely durable and reliable. This light isn’t much bigger than their other compact light-only models. But you still get the benefit of a laser.

So, the next time you’re pondering whether to go with a light or a laser, remember — you don’t have to choose. With the TCM-365-GL, you can have your cake and eat it too.
