Striker-fired and metal-framed are two descriptions seldom used to describe a modern handgun. But Smith & Wesson has defied expectations by releasing an aluminum-framed version of their famed M&P 9 pistol, which originally debuted as a polymer design. The Smith & Wesson M&P 9 Metal Compact affords the benefits of a metal frame and a consistent striker action in a more carry-friendly package.

The M&P 9 Metal Compact is essentially the preexisting M&P 2.0 polymer-framed handgun with a grey anodized aluminum frame and updated with an optics-ready configuration. The frame features a scalloped grip frame and a set of four stippled polymer backstraps to customize the grip angle to fit the end user.
The slide is stainless steel and finished in a tungsten grey cerakote to match the frame. It features the same tactile forward and rearward cocking serrations as on previous iterations of the M&P 2.0 as well as conventional drift adjustable 3-dot dovetailed iron sights in addition to its CORE optic system.
The new M&P 9 Metal Compact ships with two fifteen-round magazines and is available with either a 3.6-inch or 4.0-inch barrel. A version with capacity-compliant ten-round magazines is also available. MSRP for all models is $899.
