Streamlight TLR-3 X Gun Light

Kenneth Stretz

Unveiled at SHOT Show 2026, the Streamlight TLR-3 X is the modern evolution of the classic, polymer TLR-3. While the original was a staple for subcompact pistols, its 170-lumen output had begun to show its age in a market dominated by high-candela alternatives.

The TLR-3X changes that, significantly boosting performance while introducing “Multi-Fuel” versatility. Here is everything you need to know about the new addition to the TLR family.

Performance Specs: Small Body, Big Punch

The TLR-3X is designed specifically for compact and subcompact handguns where rail space is at a premium. Despite its tiny footprint, it now delivers enough power to be a viable home-defense and concealed-carry tool.

  • Lumens: 500
  • Candela: 6,500
  • Beam Distance: 161 Meters
  • Weight: 2.15 oz (CR123A) / 2.25 oz (SL-B9)
  • Dimensions: 2.75″ Long x 1.07″ Wide
  • Waterproofing: IPX7 (1 meter for 30 minutes)

The “X” designation in Streamlight’s lineup signifies multi-fuel support. The TLR-3X can run on a CR123A lithium battery for 1.5 hours of runtime, or a SL-B9 (USB-C rechargeable) battery with one hour of runtime.

Key Features & Design

The TLR-3X maintains the lightweight polymer construction of its predecessor but adds several tactical refinements.

Its customizable fit includes a variety of keys and multiple paddle switch options, allowing users to tailor the reach and feel to their specific handgun. For safety, the light utilizes a one-handed “snap-on and tighten” interface, which ensures it can be attached or detached without ever placing hands in front of the muzzle.

Durability is also a priority, featuring a high-temperature, shock-mounted BOROFLOAT® glass lens designed to withstand the intense heat and blast of live fire. Operationally, the ambidextrous rear paddles support both momentary and constant-on modes, complete with a user-programmable strobe function for added versatility.

Mounting & Compatibility

Streamlight is launching the TLR-3X in three distinct models to ensure a flush, secure fit across the most popular carry platforms:

  1. Standard 1913: Fits most Picatinny rails on compact and full-size pistols.
  2. 1913 Slim: Purpose-built for the Glock 43X/48 MOS and the FN Reflex.
  3. P365 Model: A dedicated version that fits the proprietary rails of the SIG Sauer P365 and P365 XL.

Tlr-3 x vs. tlr-7 sub

I found it only fitting to compare the TLR-3 X to its predecessor in the slimline weaponlight world, the TLR-7 sub. The TLR-7 Sub has been on my Glock 48 MOS for some time now, and I love it.

While equal in lumens to the TLR-7 Sub (500), the TLR-3 X gives you gains in candela (6,500 vs 5,000) and further throw or “beam distance” 161 meters vs. 141 meters.

I also noticed that while the TLR-3 X has a slightly brighter and whiter “hot spot” or center of the beam, the “spill” or peripheral light that surrounds the intense central hotspot of the beam is bigger in the TLR-7 Sub. Interesting note, as evidenced in the attached pictures, the 7 Sub appeared to have a brighter hot spot at 3 yards.

Size and weight are also similar in both, with a slight lead going to the polymer-bodied TLR-3 X. The TLR-3 X is lighter at 2.19 oz vs. the 2.40 oz of the TLR-7 Sub, and thinner at 1.07″ vs. the 1.16″ of the 7 Sub. The 3 X is slightly longer and taller than the TLR-7 Sub.

I do prefer the switch that came on the 3 X over the 7 Sub. It is slightly higher and feels more comfortable to activate with either the thumb of the support hand or the trigger finger of the dominant hand. It also comes with a shorter switch that is user-swappable if you prefer a shorter switch option.

Price and Availability

The TLR-3X is positioned as a budget-friendly, high-performance alternative to more expensive aluminum-bodied lights, with an MSRP between $170 and $179 (street prices are often lower, around $110). You can choose between two models: the standard TLR-3X, which ships with a CR123A battery, or the TLR-3X USB, which includes the rechargeable SL-B9 battery.

the verdict

Anyone carrying a slimline 9mm can not go wrong with either the Streamlight TLR-7 Sub or the TLR-3 X. But if you want a slight advantage in weight, throw/hot spot, in a thinner package, then the Streamlight TLR-3 X is for you.
