The 6360RDSO Embraces the XMACRO

Travis Pike

If you tell me you own a SIG P365, I’m going to need some qualifiers, because there isn’t just one P365 anymore. That single micro-compact handgun has grown into a massive lineup of firearms that range from concealed carry guns to duty-sized guns, and the 6360RDSO now comes as a duty holster for those duty-sized models.

The SIG P365’s popularity in the duty world is often tied to plainclothes police, like investigators. It offers a smaller, lighter platform for officers who are less likely to reach for their duty gun. As P365 popularity grew, though, it remained smaller than most duty-grade guns.

The XMACRO has a new partner with the 6360RDSO.

The SIG XMACRO provides a moderately sized firearm with either a 3.1-inch barrel and an integrated compensator or a 3.7-inch barrel. This puts it in the compact category currently dominated by the Glock 19. The SIG XMACRO can use 17 and 21-round magazines through SIG’s efficient stack-and-a-half-type magazine.

While it might be in the same realm of height and length as other compact pistols, the gun is thin at 1.1 inches. It’s got a svelte design that’s exceptionally lightweight and provides a fantastic duty gun that doesn’t compromise on features and capacity.

Doesn’t it look cute by its bigger brother?

The only thing it was missing was a proper duty holster. For too long, the SIG P365 and its numerous variants have been considered concealed carry weapons, and holsters reflected that. With the 6360RDSO, that’s changed.

The Safariland 6360RDSO

Can you call a holster cute? It feels weird to call anything in the duty world cute, but compare the 6360RDSO for the XMACRO to the 6304RDSO, and it’s quite small—it looks like “Honey, I Shrunk the Holster.”

I think this size is fantastic. The SIG XMACRO’s appeal is its small overall size. A smaller holster provides a lighter holster that matches the appeal of the XMACRO without sacrificing any of the duty features we know and love. This includes the Safariland retention systems.

The 6360RDSO comes in both a Level 3 system, like you see here. It has the SLS hood and ALS lever. Safariland also produces an ALS-only model that provides Level 1 retention.

Options are important, and the new XMACRO holster is compatible with all of the standard attachments available to other Safariland duty holsters. This includes various mounting options, the ALS shield, and so much more. The XMACRO comes with a rail for lights and an optics cut, and the 6360RDSO functions with both lights and optics.

What’s impressive is the engineering required to take a standard duty holster and shrink it to efficiently function with the XMACRO design. The 6360RDSO is a complete duty holster designed for users who need to maximize access, retention, and capability.

Working With the 6360RDSO

The 6360RDSO provides a durable and capable duty holster. If you’re not familiar with Safariland’s designs, you’ve come to the right place.

This holster is made from SafariLaminate and features a thermal-molded body for protection, retention, and safety. The trigger remains completely covered by the holster and protected to maximize safety. The suede lining keeps the finish both looking good and protecting your gun from rust.

Safety, security, intuitive use? What else could you want?

The locking mechanism that keeps the gun in the holster includes the Automatic Locking System (ALS) lever. This lever locks onto the ejection port and provides active retention. The user has to pull the lever rearward with their thumb to free the gun.

If you opt for the Level 3 model, you also get the SLS (Self-Locking System). This is a hood that rotates up and over the gun. Defeating this hood requires pressing down on it and pushing it forward.

When combined, the 6360RDSO provides three distinct hand movements to free the gun. This provides the highest possible retention while also offering a simple, intuitive system for shooters to operate.

Accessorizing the XMACRO

Modern law enforcement and duty firearms often come equipped with red dots and lights. Having a holster that accommodates both is a no-brainer. The 6360RDSO doesn’t just allow you to carry your gun with these accessories equipped, but also protects both.

The 6360RDSO provides a rock-solid holster that protects the gun in every way.

Your red dot is concealed within the holster, protecting it from the elements and also preventing anything from engaging any buttons that might adjust brightness levels. Your weapon light is completely hidden within the holster, preventing accidental activation.

The accessories are optional; the holster still functions without them installed, since the holster doesn’t rely on them for retention.

To The Range

One of the things you’ll learn is that a Level 3 holster does require training and consistent practice. Deactivating the retention devices isn’t difficult, but to do so smoothly and quickly, you’ll need a fair bit of both dry fire and live fire time.

If you dedicate the time necessary to master the retention devices, you can turn it into a bit of a dance. Muscle memory takes over, and your thumb will press the SLS hood down and rotate it forward and immediately sweep back, deactivating the ALS lever. This can all be done smoothly if you practice and train.

It takes training, but with a little time, you can master the 6360RDSO.

At the range, I was capable of quickly deactivating the retention devices and placing a shot inside an IPSC A-zone in less than 1.5 seconds. For a Level 3 holster with three distinct movements, I’ll call that fast. It took practice; I sat in front of a mirror and worked the same movement with an unloaded and cleared XMACRO.

I found the security devices easy to defeat in various positions, including kneeling behind cover, crouching, and moving. Moving creates a new challenge, but gunfights aren’t stationary affairs. You should be moving, and your threat is likely moving, too. Mastering the holster in various positions and movements should be a part of routine training.

Keeping It Clinched

The 6360RDSO provides such secure retention that you can low crawl 100 yards and know your gun will still be in the holster. You can scale walls, sprint, and go hands-on while knowing your firearm remains firmly in place in your holster.

In a class with Rich Graham, he showed us that the old type of retention fighting isn’t valid with the Safariland holster. You don’t have to keep one hand on the gun if it’s in the holster. You can dedicate two hands to fighting the bad guy, creating distance, and then drawing and dealing with the threat.

A handgun take isn’t a concern you’ll have with Level 3 retention.

In the class, we practiced attacking and trying to take each other’s guns, and there wasn’t one single successful grab. Each of us was trained with the Safariland system, and we knew how it worked, but we still couldn’t take the gun.

That kind of retention is invaluable, and it’s what the 6360RDSO provides you and your SIG XMACRO.

Keeping It Locked In

To be clear, this isn’t going to be a good concealed carry holster. It’s fairly large and meant to be worn openly. It’s propelled from the belt to provide a better grip.

Safariland rules the duty market for a reason

If you purchase this holster for concealed carry, you’re going to be disappointed. Stick to the Schema, the Incog, and other dedicated concealed carry holsters.

If you’re law enforcement, armed security, or want active retention, then the 6360RDSO has you covered in more ways than one.
