The FN 5.7x28mm cartridge has broken grown now that manufacturers other than FN are in the game of producing pistols and ammunition. The motivation is simple: take advantage of the excellent 5.7 round, which boasts low recoil, high velocity, and a flat trajectory.
Existing 5.7 pistols did not always pass muster because of the lack of capacity-compliant magazines. Smith & Wesson has answered the call with their M&P 5.7 pistol, now available with a 10-round magazine capacity.

The Smith & Wesson M&P 5.7 is the company’s entry into the 5.7x28mm chambering. The 5.7 model originally joined the renowned M&P family in 2023 and is available with standard-capacity 22-round magazines. With this new model, aside from shipping with capacity complaint magazines, you get the same excellent pistol.
Like most handguns chambered for the lengthy 5.7 cartridge, the M&P 5.7 is a full-sized handgun with an internal hammer fired for best ignition. It is a polymer framed design that wears a Picatinny-style rail and a light single-action trigger pull paired with a redundant trigger safety. The M&P 5.7 is about as ambidextrous as a 5.7 pistol can be, as it features an ambidextrous thumb safety, slide release, and reversible magazine release button.
The M&P 5.7 uses a melonite-coated slide that features forward and rearward cocking serrations, elevated white dot iron sights, and an RMSc optics footprint. Unlike other 5.7 pistols that use a delayed blowback action, the M&P 5.7 is gas operated and utilizes S&W’s TEMPO rotating barrel to tame the high pressures of the 5.7 round and produce sedate felt recoil.
At this time, the new capacity-compliant M&P 5.7 is only available with a black frame and slide finish. It ships with two 10-round magazines and a hard case. MSRP is $699.99.
