2025 has undoubtedly become the year of the double-stack 1911 (often referred to as 2011s, but Staccato holds the trademark on that name). It seems many of the new firearm introductions have focused on building variations thereof. The latest in that track is the Apache Commander from WATCHTOWER Defense.
WHO IS WATCHTOWER?
If you recall, F1 Firearms, builders of exotic A5-15 platform rifles, filed for bankruptcy several years ago. F1 was then acquired by WATCHTOWER Defense in 2023, which used F1’s manufacturing infrastructure to focus on building high-quality double-stack 1911 pistols, AR-15s, and bolt-action rifles. WATCHTOWER’s name is derived from the brave Americans who fought in the Pacific during the Guadalcanal campaign, codenamed Operation Watchtower.

FEATURES
The Apache Commander double-stack 1911 is a modern duty pistol built with precision machining and a confidence-inspiring stainless-steel frame. The Commander-size frame is better suited for carry than the full-size compensated Apache. An adjustable 4.5–5.5 lb. trigger maintains a crisp break without sacrificing duty reliability, and ambidextrous safety controls make it accessible for a wide range of shooters. Again, something optimal for duty-use.

WATCHTOWER’s advanced coatings give the pistol a low-friction, corrosion-resistant finish that remains smooth under harsh conditions. The slide and frame are constructed from stainless steel, while the grip module is made of a proprietary blend of Carbon Fiber, Kevlar, and GF Nylon.
The Apache Commander features a full-length Picatinny rail for mounting your favorite light or other accessory. Available in Black or Flat Dark Earth, this pistol combines its rugged construction with a clean, utilitarian style. Each pistol includes three 17-round magazines (nice) and a WATCHTOWER Pistol Case. And it’s backed by WATCHTOWER’s lifetime warranty.

Zooming Out
The Apache Commander (whose name is derived from Operation Apache Snow in 1968) is the latest in a wave of 2011-style handguns being introduced to the market.
Feature-wise, it checks a lot of boxes. However, the price is a bit steep. At $4000, it costs substantially more than the Staccato P and new HD lines, which already have a wide market acceptance. The Double-Stack 1911 market is becoming crowded as manufacturers vie for a share. Only time will tell whether WATCHTOWER can claim a piece.
