US Marines 250th Birthday: Here’s How It Will Be Celebrated

Jason Mosher

On November 10, 1775, in a cozy little bar called Tun Tavern in Philadelphia, the US Marines were born. A resolution was passed by the Continental Congress to raise two battalions of Marines, who would serve as an elite fighting force.

This iconic force would go on to become one of the most respected and experienced combat units in Military history. This is why, every year, Marines around the globe put on their finest uniforms, gather for formal ceremonies, and celebrate not an anniversary, but a birthday.

You see, for Marines, “birthday” isn’t just a word; it’s a sacred tradition. It emphasizes the idea of a living, evolving entity; a family, instead of an organization, marking a passage of time. This birthday, however, is even a little more special than those before it because they have reached the 250-year milestone.

As the Marine Corps approaches this monumental year, the celebrations have already begun. After all, such an impressive and patriotic event requires more than just one day of celebrating, doesn’t it?

A Year-Long Celebration Across the Nation

The 250th birthday celebration officially began on December 12, 2024, and festivities have already been taking place. These events all lead up to the grand finale in Washington, DC, at the Commandant’s Birthday Ball on November 10t,h 2025.

Here’s a quick look at what has already taken place and what to expect as the big day approaches.

Super Bowl LIX – New Orleans

One of the biggest events that kicked off celebrations for the US Marines was the Super Bowl. This isn’t what normally comes to mind when you think of a military celebration. But the Super Bowl is the most-watched event each year. And on February 9, 2025, 127.7 million viewers set a record for average viewership, ever.

Because they were chosen as the lead service for the event, Marine Corps aircraft provided the flyover at the beginning of the game. People could also meet and pay tribute to Marines during pre-game events. This was a great way to honor the men and women of the Marine Corps.

“Marine Weeks” and Community Engagements

Throughout 2025, cities across America have been hosting “Marine Weeks,” which bring the Corps directly to the public. These events typically feature:

  • Demonstrations: Live tactical demonstrations, showcasing the precision and readiness of Marine units.
  • Static Displays: Opportunities for the public to get up close with Marine aircraft, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Community Service Projects: Marines actively participating in local volunteer efforts, reinforcing their commitment to service beyond combat.
  • Musical Performances: The renowned U.S. Marine Band, “The President’s Own,” and other Marine musical ensembles will perform free concerts, entertaining and inspiring audiences.

Cities that will get this special visit include: Los Angeles, Nashville, Chicago, Boston, and Atlanta. These weeks are important because they provide interaction between the civilian population and the men and women in uniform. It allows communities to personally thank and interact with their Marines.

The Birthplace Celebration: Philadelphia Takes Center Stage

It only makes sense that Philadelphia will take center stage, after all, it was the birthplace of the Marine Corps. The city is preparing for a series of major events in November 2025, including:

  • Reenactments: Historical reenactments of the Corps’ founding at Tun Tavern and other early moments in Marine history.
  • Parades and Ceremonies: Grand parades through historic Philadelphia, culminating in a significant ceremony near Independence Hall, recognizing the Marines’ enduring connection to the nation’s founding principles.
  • Exhibits and Museums: Special exhibits at local museums and historical sites dedicated to Marine Corps history, featuring artifacts and stories from across 250 years of service.

Philadelphia’s celebrations will serve as the emotional heart of the anniversary, connecting modern Marines to their roots.

Marine Corps Birthday Balls Worldwide

While larger events unfold throughout the year, the historic tradition of the Marine Corps Birthday Ball will remain the premier event. On or around November 10, 2025, Marines will gather at every post, station, and deployed location around the globe. During these gatherings, here are some of the things that will take place:

  • The Reading of General John A. Lejeune’s Birthday Message: A message that recounts the Corps’ history and traditions.
  • The Cake-Cutting Ceremony: A deeply symbolic ritual where the first piece of cake is presented to the guest of honor. The second will go to the oldest Marine present (representing the wisdom and experience of the Corps). The third piece will go to the youngest Marine present (representing the future of the Corps).
  • Guest Speakers: Inspirational addresses from prominent leaders, both military and civilian, will take place.

These balls are not just social events; they are expressions of esprit de corps (French for “spirit of the body”). This reinforces the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood that define the Marine Corps.

National Commemorations and Official Recognition

Besides the celebrations and balls, our country is celebrating the event in other ways too. The U.S. Mint has already begun planning special commemorative coins. These include gold, silver, and clad versions, which are expected to be available in 2025. These limited-edition coins will feature iconic Marine imagery and symbols, making them great collectible items.

The U.S. Postal Service is designing a commemorative stamp, which is another great way for the US to show its appreciation and support for the US Marines.

The Few and the Proud

The first major action taken by the US Marines was in 1776 when they captured Fort Nassau in the Bahamas. US Marines have been a part of every major US conflict since then, often fighting on the front lines.

Those who serve in our military become heroes for every American. It is their sacrifice and service that keep our homeland free, and they are the reason we can sleep peacefully in our beds tonight.
