The production of Walther’s series of legacy pistols, including PP, PPK, and PPK/S, is coming to an end—for now.
A recent press release, which has made the rounds around social media, states, “For nearly a century, the Walther PP-series pistols have stood as global symbols of craftsmanship, elegance, and reliability. Immortalized in popular culture and revered by firearm enthusiasts worldwide, these handguns have set the standard for timeless design and performance. Today, Walther honors that legacy while clearing the path for the next evolution.”
What This Means
So yes, Walther is discontinuing the production of the PP-series of handguns. But this isn’t the end. The PP, PPK, and PPK/S are now entering a “multi-year reengineering and modernization program.” Essentially, Walther is exploring ways to streamline manufacturing and modernize the pistol’s feature set, while maintaining its iconic look and feel.

The Walther PP series of pistols is iconic and instantly recognizable. Their reputation as the primary sidearm of Ian Fleming’s James Bond gives the pistol lasting popularity. Because of this, it’s surprising that Walther has decided to halt full production while they update the platform, rather than some form of in-between.
For all the Bond and spy thriller fans, there is naught to worry. As Tyler Weigel, the VP of Sales at Walther, stated, “This is not the end of the PPK story. It’s the beginning of a new chapter. Our goal is to honor the heritage of these iconic firearms by bringing them into the future without compromising what made them classics.”

Zooming Out
Currently, all existing stock of PP, PPK, and PPK/S pistols has been sold into the market. This means the only available stock is on the shelves of dealers and distributors nationwide. This includes the latest SD variant of the PPK and PPK/S. These pistols mark the first time Walther has released a factory-threaded version of the 32 ACP pistol. For collectors and enthusiasts who want to add one to their collections, now is the time to get it. Don’t wait.
