Smith & Wesson 940-3: CADRE NEWS

Cory Ross

I’ll admit, I’m a big fan of Smith & Wesson revolvers. (Though that’s not much of a surprise…) Each year, Smith releases newer and more interesting versions of its guns for a good reason — they are popular.

Most of these have been distributor exclusives, usually through Lipsey’s or Davidson’s. In 2025, this was the case with the 940, a J-Frame revolver in 9mm that was a Davidson’s exclusive. Fortunately, its popularity compelled Smith & Wesson to add a version to their standard catalog: the 940-3.

The Model 940-3 offers a great mix of durability and performance in a classic look—and is personally, one of my favorite carry revolvers. The standard specs are as follows:

FEATURES

The Model 940-3 offers a balanced mix of durability and performance in a timeless, carry-ready frame. Built on a stainless-steel, no-lock frame, this J-Frame size revolver remains compact at just 1.3 inches wide and 23 ounces, striking a sweet spot between shootability and everyday comfort.

Chambered in 9mm Luger, it features a 5-shot fluted cylinder and a 2.17-inch stainless-steel barrel, delivering the practical efficiency revolver fans value. A snag-free concealed hammer ensures a smooth draw, while the Tritium XS front night sight and u-notch dovetail rear sight come pre-installed for low-light confidence right out of the box. The precision-fit Hogue Over-Molded Rubber Bantam grip has intuitive finger grooves and a Cobblestone pattern for a secure, comfortable hold under recoil.

ZOOMING OUT

I’m glad Big Blue introduced the 940 as a standard model. While I understand why distributor exclusives exist, it can be annoying. Not everyone has access to them. And of course, exclusivity creates desirability. But now that it’s a standard model, everyone has access to it. If you want to elevate your carry game, check it out.
