I’ve been in the firearms space professionally for over 14 years. During that time, many fads have come and gone. People, more so, come and go.
Our world today is trying to capture your attention. Social media is designed to arrest your eyes and waste away your most valuable commodity—time. That’s a long way from its original purpose—to connect people. Now, it’s a marketing tool. Add in AI, and it’s even harder to sift through what is real and what isn’t.
It’s rare that people (and companies) push through all the noise and remain a dominant force. How do they do it? By being authentic—by being themselves. Travis Haley of Haley Strategic Partners is one such man.
WHO IS TRAVIS HALEY?
If you’ve been in the gun world for a while, especially on the gear and training side, Travis Haley is a familiar name. What stands out in his background is how, at a young age, he understood a sense of duty.
Growing up on a Florida family farm, he spent his days outdoors—hunting, swimming, riding four-wheelers, and even catching diamondback rattlesnakes for boot and belt makers (His first job. That’s a hell no for me. I don’t do snakes.). He was also a natural athlete (he’s the guy you know who’s really good at everything). That foundation carried directly into his decision at 17 to pass on a college football opportunity and instead enlist in the United States Marine Corps.
Over nearly three decades of combined military, reserve, and private-sector service, Haley’s operational experience expanded from Special Operations as a Force Recon Marine (or is it Raiders? MARSOC? No one knows.) to work with the US Navy Center for Anti-Terrorism and various government agencies. He spent much of his career in Iraq and Afghanistan, but his service ultimately spanned operations in more than 45 countries.

After active duty, he transitioned into training and development, founding Simply Dynamics Inc. Simply Dynamics eventually joined Magpul Industries and became Magpul Dynamics (The training arm of Magpul. You know, the company that makes all of your 30-round mags?) There, he played a key role in reshaping modern firearms instruction and making advanced tactics more accessible to responsible armed citizens. He later served as CEO of Magpul Industries before founding Haley Strategic Partners, where he continued his focus on performance-driven training and product development.
Alongside his industry work, Haley has served in law enforcement roles as a tactics instructor and Critical Response Specialist, while also mentoring others through coaching centered on resilience and post-traumatic growth.
What does that make him? One badass dude. This doesn’t even begin to cover the stories he could tell (including powered para-gliding).
TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, (BUT NOT A) SPY
While Travis Haley is really known for his training philosophy, most people are familiar with his line of tactical gear and textiles. So, how does a career special operator get into sewing? A longstanding joke is that Haley Strategic was founded on dental floss and a needle. The operators might call that fieldcraft. Really, Travis designed and built his own gear to help him when in-country.
The battlefield is a continuously evolving space. Getting new gear that’s better suited is a slow process. So instead, guys would add pockets, pouches, and more to their uniforms—backpacks, chest rigs, belts, and plate carriers. On any space they could sew, they did. In a way, it’s a genius business model. You are rapid-prototyping and field-testing simultaneously. You literally learn instantly whether something works or doesn’t.

That’s the type of experience that makes Haley Strategic products so good. Travis and his team build them from experience. And you see that throughout their product catalog. Nearly all of it has seen real-world use and was developed for a specific mission. Even Travis’s INCOG X line of holsters, developed in partnership with Safariland, came from him tinkering around to make a better holster.
THE TRAIN STATION
In reality, anyone can sit down and design functional gear. But what really sets companies like Haley Strategic apart is their philosophy.
HSP is a company built around people first, with business serving as the vehicle that carries those ideas forward. Travis Haley often describes it as the “train station mentality.” This refers to westward expansion in the Nineteenth Century. As people moved west, so did the trainlines. Over time, the trainlines would bypass existing towns, leaving them behind. Without a train to keep them supplied and to bring people to them, those towns faded away. Haley’s approach is the opposite—they stop at those towns.

The idea is simple: don’t leave people behind, especially those who helped build the journey in the first place. That mindset permeates the company culture. For example, HSP refers to its training staff as coaches rather than instructors. This might not seem like a big deal, but a coach is someone who works with people to make them better, not tell them how.
The train-station mentality also shapes the company’s broader business practices, prioritizing relationships and meaning over chasing money or short-term success. To Travis, it’s not about the money. It’s about shaping people, providing them with quality products and services, and protecting the warriors down range.
That mentality comes through clearly in Travis Haley’s public appearances, including an episode of The Sean Ryan Show, where he dives deeper into leadership, resilience, and the company’s culture (it’s over four-and-a-half hours long. Maybe listen to it over a long flight or road trip.)

FINAL THOUGHTS
In a world filled with clickbait, flashy headlines, and AI-generated images, Travis Haley and HSP stand out. He’s as authentic as anyone can be. After spending time with him, it’s clear he’s a no-B.S. kind of person. His goal is to make you better. Whether that’s through training or gear, that’s his mission. Travis won’t leave anyone behind.
