Safariland Dual Rifle Bag: Full Review

Jason Mosher

Today, we are looking at the Safariland 36” Dual Rifle Case. You can carry it like a shoulder bag, a handbag, or a backpack. It’s made to carry two rifles, ammo, mags, safety gear, and even a handgun. So, before you run off to the range with an arm full of shooting gear, give this rifle case a quick glance.

If you’re like me, heading to the range can be a major hassle. It’s not just your rifle; you need ammunition, multiple magazines, safety equipment, etc. For a long time, I would sling my rifle over my shoulder and put everything else in a range bag. But in today’s world, walking around with a rifle slung over your shoulder is…well… not always a good idea. A lot of shooting ranges are starting to require all firearms to be in cases until you are on the line and ready to shoot.

For a while, I tried using a compact rifle case and my range bag, but it still feels like a lot to carry just for a “quick range trip.” If I’m going to spend all day at the range, then sure, I still take my range bag with all the goodies in it. But when I want to pop in and run a couple of drills with a rifle, this rifle case will carry everything I need.

Dual Rifle Case Construction and Durability

The Safariland 36″ Dual Rifle Case is made from ballistic pack cloth. This is an abrasion-resistant material used on a lot of military and outdoor gear. Because the high-tensile-strength fabric is great for resisting tears and punctures, it’s perfect for a gun case.

The zippers are all heavy-duty and designed for frequent use. I’ve had some zippers break over the years, so the quality of the zipper is something I pay attention to now. There are double zippers on the rifle compartment and the smaller handgun/accessory compartment. You can lock the zippers together, which is great for traveling.

On the inside, closed-cell foam padding protects the firearms and other gear inside. There’s also a 2-inch padded perimeter lip to give your firearms even more protection from bumps and scrapes.

Storage and Organization

When you plan to keep multiple things in a bag, being able to keep it organized is important. I like to know where everything is so I can access it quickly and not spend half my time digging around for things.

Obviously, the largest compartment is the one that holds your rifles. A padded divider separates each gun, but once you unzip it, the rifles are easy to retrieve.

The second compartment has two padded compartments with zippers that are great for handguns. If you wanted, you could fit multiple handguns on each side. I like to use one for a handgun and the other side for lights, a knife, and other various things I may want to take with me.

On the other side of this section are two more compartments with zippers for keeping smaller things. The material on this is a thin canvas, so it would be great for keys, phone, and extra mags.

There is also an adjustable outside covered pouch that is perfect for quick-access items. You could keep a range finder, rifle mags, sunglasses, and other items in this compartment.

Another feature I haven’t mentioned yet is the MOLLE webbing across the front of the bag. You can add any type of accessories to the front that are MOLLE-compatible. At some point, I plan to add some AR and pistol mag holders and maybe even a pouch for carrying some binoculars.

Dual Rifle Case Portability

As you start filling a case with gear, it can get a little heavy. But one thing I like about this case is the options for carrying it. As I mentioned in the beginning, there are three ways to carry this case. The first is with the center carry handle. The straps are thick and durable, so it’s easy to just pick it up and go.

A shoulder strap comes pre-attached, so you can also carry it over your shoulder when you need your other hand. This is the method I use the most when walking to and from my vehicle.

The third option for carrying the rifle case is with the backpack straps. If you need to get somewhere that will require a little hiking, you can cinch the entire rifle case to your back and free up both hands. This is great for hunting trips or on those occasions when you are hauling a lot of gear. You could easily carry this case on your back and another bag or case in each hand.

One of the places where I go to shoot is in a wooded area that requires crossing over a stream and climbing up an embankment. This is nearly impossible to do without both hands being free. I’ve used this bag multiple times when I needed to take some rifles out to shoot. There is padding on the shoulder straps, so it’s just as comfortable to wear as any other backpack.

Take it all in one bag

For me, this rifle case isn’t a replacement for any of my other bags and cases, but more of another option. It’s nice to have multiple sizes of cases and bags so you can decide what you need to take based on your plans for that day. My range bag stays ready to go, but all my other bags are kept empty so I can load what I need that day and go.

This size of bag will accommodate most full-size AR and AK rifles unless you have a full-length fixed stock. It comes in black and FDE and retails for $134-$154. That’s a great price for a durable case that can carry two rifles and a ton of other gear.
